The 7th International Conference on Language and Education has commenced, running from October 4th to 6th, 2023, at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand. This year’s central theme is “Multilingual Education for Transformative Education Systems and Resilient Futures.”
This conference has attracted distinguished figures in the field, comprising educators, linguists, researchers, policymakers, and language enthusiasts from the region.
The Karen Education and Culture Department (KECD) is actively participating in this event, with key representatives in attendance, including Th’ra Hayso, Head of Bureau of Higher Education; Th’ra Shar Poe Nay Thaw, Manager of BBCD (Broad-Based Capacity Development); Th’ra Nay Tar Moo, MTB-MLE Officer, and Saw Thaw Thi, Communications and Advocacy Unit Manager.Within KECD, the Bureau of Basic Education is taking a proactive approach to advance curriculum development through its core Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) program.
This comprehensive initiative focuses on the creation of mother tongue-based textbooks, the promotion of techniques to teach culturally-relevant art, and the development of tailored learning materials and tools for schools. It’s worth noting that the KECD curriculum is specifically designed to be rooted in the mother tongue of the Karen community, ensuring a culturally-sensitive, energising and impactful educational approach.
