Schools Forced to Relocate Due to Ongoing Conflict
Since the 2021 coup, the SAC has intentionally carried out attacks on communities using drones, airstrikes, and artillery shelling. As a result of this ongoing political instability, many students, teachers, and civilians in the Karen Education and Culture Department’s operational areas—in seven districts have been displaced and forced to seek shelter in hiding places.
On February 23, 2025, intense fighting in Hpa-An District, Ta Kreh Township, led to the displacement of four schools. It is estimated that over 400 students, including young children, have been affected, along with more than 30 teachers.
The displaced students and teachers are now facing severe shortages of food, clean water, hygiene materials, health kits, and proper sleeping arrangements. Teachers are deeply concerned about the safety, physical health, and mental health and emotional well-being of the children in their care.
As an organization dedicated to providing education service, we share the concerns of the teachers and students. Seeing their struggles firsthand, we are deeply worried about their well-being.
